Normally, when it comes to hard soil versus the sheer grunt and power of our Airforce Terralift there's no match.
With such a small amount of rain falling before, during and after the Saltex trade show, ground conditions adjacent to the trackwere, let's say, more than testing.
However, the guys at Windsor racecourse have a right to extract water from the River Thames so the track itself was green and lush and underneath the corrugated aluminium crossing roads, conditions were perfect for our treatments.
There is an immense amount of heavy traffic crossing the race track before, during and after the show so it is important that the surface is protected so that horses cannot damage legs by falling into pot-holes.
Once the aluminium sheets are lifted (see image) we pass over the surface and inject air to a depth of up to one metre via a steel probe.
Grounds Manager Jeff Green told us that it’s one of those situations where you can’t afford to take a chance. With race meetings every three weeks we need to get the surface right.
Luckily, Saltex comes at a time of year when it is the perfect time to reovate grass surfaces and new grass seed will throw down a deep root system very quickly.
